The much-anticipated reopening of the First Niger Bridge has been delayed as persistent rainfall continues to hamper ongoing rehabilitation works on the ageing bridge.
The Acting Federal Controller of Works, Anambra Field Headquarters, Engr. Timothy Emenike, disclosed this in an interview with ARISE NEWS, saying the two-week closure period which was expected to end today, Monday, could no longer be met.
Emenike explained that heavy downpour in the last few days washed off some sections of the newly reconstructed portions, making it impossible for contractors to carry out finishing works.
“The weather has not been favourable. Some of the works already done were affected by the rain. We need at least three consecutive days of sunshine to complete the outstanding works and ensure the bridge is safe for use,” he said.
He appealed to motorists, commuters and other road users to exercise patience, assuring that the Federal Ministry of Works is working to deliver a stronger and safer bridge.
Vehicular movement on the historic bridge was completely restricted two weeks ago to allow for urgent maintenance works, forcing motorists plying the Onitsha-Asaba corridor to divert to the Second Niger Bridge and other alternative routes.
The closure has resulted in longer travel time, traffic congestion and increased transport fares, with pedestrians and commuters lamenting the hardship of navigating the diversions.
