Egypt secured a historic first-ever World Cup knockout round victory on Friday night, July 3, beating Australia 4-2 on penalties after a tense 1-1 draw through 120 minutes.
The Pharaohs struck first in the 13th minute when Emam Ashour rose unmarked to meet a superb cross from Karim Hafez and powered a header into the bottom left corner. Australian goalkeeper Patrick Beach had no chance as the defense failed to track Ashour, who could not hide his joy at scoring on the World Cup knockout stage.
Australia grew into the game and found their equalizer in the 55th minute. Aiden O’Neill’s set-piece into the box took a deflection off Egypt’s Mohamed Hany and looped past goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir. From there the match settled into a cagey affair, with both sides creating half-chances but failing to find a winner in regulation time.
Extra time brought little clear action. Egypt pushed late in the second period, pinning Australia in their half, but the Socceroos used the space to counter. With one minute left, Australia made a tactical change, bringing on veteran Mathew Ryan as a penalty specialist in place of Beach.
The shootout proved decisive. Mahmoud Saber opened for Egypt with a powerful strike after Australia missed their first kick. Jackson Irvine and Ramy Rabia then traded goals, before Mohamed Salah sent Ryan the wrong way to make it 3-2. Lucas Herrington hit the crossbar for Australia, and Hossam Abdelmaguid stepped up to convert the winner, sending his shot into the bottom left corner and sparking wild celebrations.
The victory sends Egypt through to the Round of 16 and marks a landmark moment for the Pharaohs, who had never before advanced past the group stage in a World Cup.
