One person has been confirmed dead, while several others are feared missing after a passenger boat capsized at the Buruku crossing point of the River Katsina-Ala in Benue State.
The boat was conveying more than 70 mourners and over 30 motorcycles as passengers returned from a burial ceremony, mostly in Mbayion, Gboko Local Government Area.
Chairman of Buruku Local Government Area, Raymond Zege, says the boat’s engine reportedly failed mid-journey, causing it to overturn amid strong waves.
More than 60 passengers have reportedly been rescued, as search and rescue operations continue for those still unaccounted for.
The State Government says boat operators have been mobilised to support rescue efforts, while reiterating the need for strict compliance with water transport safety regulations, particularly the use of life jackets.
