Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Badaru Abubakar, Resigns

Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect, citing health reasons.

In a letter to President Bola Tinubu dated December 1, Abubakar announced his decision to step down. President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed appreciation for Abubakar’s service to the nation.

A successor is expected to be announced later this week, pending Senate approval.

Abubakar, 63, served as Jigawa State Governor from 2015 to 2023 before being appointed Defence Minister by President Tinubu on August 21, 2023.

The resignation comes as President Tinubu prepares to declare a national security emergency, with details to be announced soon.
