1 Killed As Suspected Gunmen Attack Plateau State

Troops of Operation Enduring Peace have launched a manhunt for suspected gunmen after the killing of a community sentry in Gwom Village, Rim District of Riyom Local Government Area, Plateau State.

The attack occurred at about 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.

Security sources said troops of Sector 6, Operation SAFE HAVEN, responded to a distress call about an attack on the village.

On arrival, they found the lifeless body of the victim, identified as Markus Musa. He was reportedly on sentry duty when the assailants attacked and killed him.

A search of the scene led to the recovery of two empty cases of 7.62mm NATO ammunition and two disintegrated metallic ammunition links. The findings suggest high-calibre weapons were used in the attack.

According to sources, members of the community evacuated the deceased’s body for burial in line with local customs.

Troops have since commenced tracking operations to apprehend the perpetrators. Security patrols have also been intensified in Gwom and surrounding communities to prevent further attacks and reassure residents.
