Jorge Messi, the father and longtime representative of Argentina captain Lionel Messi, has died at the age of 68 after a prolonged illness.
Reports from Argentina say Jorge passed away on Friday night at a medical facility in Rosario, the city where the Messi family has deep roots and where Lionel began his football career.
The man behind the legend
A pivotal figure in one of football’s greatest stories, Jorge played a central role in guiding Lionel from a talented youngster at Newell’s Old Boys to an 8-time Ballon d’Or winner and World Cup champion.
His influence was most crucial during Lionel’s early teenage years. When the future World Cup winner needed specialized growth hormone treatment, efforts to secure support in Argentina stalled. Jorge facilitated his son’s move to Barcelona at age 13, and stayed with him in Spain through the difficult early years while the rest of the family remained in Argentina.
In past interviews, Lionel spoke warmly of his father’s sacrifice during that period. He recalled how Jorge gave him the choice to return home or stay and chase his dream in Spain — a decision that shaped the course of football history.
Agent, adviser, and family man
Beyond football development, Jorge became Lionel’s trusted adviser and agent. He oversaw major contract negotiations and commercial deals throughout his son’s career. Despite his influence behind the scenes, Jorge largely avoided the spotlight and rarely granted interviews.
Concerns about his health surfaced during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, when Lionel appeared emotional after Argentina’s opening match. The family later confirmed Jorge was receiving treatment under specialist supervision.
Before dedicating himself to his son’s career, Jorge worked as a chemical technician in Argentina’s steel industry and rose to a managerial position. He also played football in his youth before leaving the sport following military service.
Tributes pour in
Jorge is survived by his wife, Celia Cuccittini, and their four children: Lionel, Rodrigo, Matías, and María Sol. Those who knew him described him as a devoted family man whose impact stretched far beyond football.
Tributes are expected from across the football world in the coming days as players, clubs, and fans honor the man whose guidance and unwavering support helped shape one of the most extraordinary careers in sporting history.
