Details have emerged on how the family of late Favour Agbro, the 20-year-old who died by suicide after alleging sexual assault by content creator Odogwu Asaaba, incurred a ₦7 million debt trying to save her life.
Speaking in a video interview on Thursday alongside the family’s legal counsel, Barrister Awele Ideal, Favour’s twin sister, Faith Agbro, said the debt came from emergency medical treatment sought as her sister’s health deteriorated.
“To save her life, we borrowed aggressively from different sources for her treatment,” Faith said. “Now, creditors are putting serious pressure on us for immediate repayment.”
The family briefing also addressed reports of a possible out-of-court settlement. Faith said that before her death, Favour had expressed a wish for leniency toward Asaaba, citing concern for his twin daughters. She added that their father has also shown some compassion toward the suspect because of the age of Asaaba’s mother.
Barrister Ideal confirmed that the suspect has made “lucrative” offers to the family in an attempt to have the case dropped. The lawyer, however, advised the family against accepting any settlement.
“Accepting any offer at this stage would compromise and truncate the ongoing judicial process,” Ideal warned.
Favour Agbro’s death sparked widespread reactions online, with calls for justice and for stronger support for survivors of sexual assault.
Police authorities have said investigations into the allegations against Odogwu Asaaba are ongoing.
