A lecturer from Northwest University, Kano, was apprehended and handed over to the police after being accused of sexual harassment by a married student.
The lecturer, identified as the Head of Department of History and International Studies at Northwest University, formerly Yusuf Maitama Sule University, and also a visiting lecturer at Maryam Abacha American Nigerian University, MAAUN, was caught after the student and her husband alleged he had demanded sex in exchange for approving her project.
According to accounts from those familiar with the matter, the student said the lecturer had delayed the approval of her final year project for two years and allegedly made sexual advances toward her.
The student reported the incident to her husband. The couple said they arranged to meet the lecturer and confronted him. A video circulating online showed the lecturer appealing for mercy while being assaulted by the group before he was taken to the police.
Reports cited screenshots allegedly from chats between the lecturer and the student in which he reportedly proposed a meeting after Maghrib prayers. Police are yet to confirm the authenticity of the messages.
The lecturer was later handed over to security operatives. As of press time, the police had not released an official statement on the case or on possible charges.
Both Northwest University and MAAUN are yet to comment publicly on the incident.
Sexual harassment allegations in tertiary institutions have continued to draw public concern, with authorities and advocacy groups calling for stronger reporting and disciplinary mechanisms.
