French superstar Kylian Mbappe has made World Cup history after becoming the first player to win the Golden Boot twice, finishing as top scorer at the 2026 tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
The Real Madrid forward scored 10 goals in eight matches to beat Argentina’s Lionel Messi to the award. It adds to the Golden Boot he won in Qatar in 2022 with eight goals.
At 27, Mbappe also became the first man to reach double figures at a single World Cup since Gerd Muller for West Germany in 1970. He sealed the record on Saturday with a brace in France’s 6-4 defeat to England in the third-place playoff in Miami, a result that saw Les Bleus finish fourth.
The two goals moved Mbappe clear at the top of the men’s all-time World Cup scoring chart with 22 goals — one ahead of Messi.
“When you score that many goals in the World Cup, it certainly takes you to a whole new level,” Mbappe said after the match.
“But I would have preferred not to be the top scorer and to have played in the final. It’s good for my legacy once I’ve retired, but right now, that’s not what’s on my mind.”
