The Presidential Candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi has urged Nigerians not to lose confidence in the electoral process, insisting that citizens remain the strongest safeguard of democracy despite current challenges.
Speaking to reporters while monitoring the ongoing voter registration exercise in Anambra State on Tuesday, the candidate said voter apathy was a greater threat to credible elections than institutional setbacks.
According to him, participation from registration to election day is non-negotiable if Nigeria must achieve transparent and credible polls.
“The electorate still holds the key to credible polls in this country. When you register, verify your details, and turn out to vote, you are protecting your future and strengthening our democracy,” he said.
He called on youths, women, and first-time voters in Anambra and across the country to take full advantage of the Continuous Voter Registration, CVR, window to ensure their voices count in 2027.
The candidate also addressed the recent court judgment directing the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to deregister the NDC. He urged party supporters and the general public not to lose faith in the Judiciary.
“Judicial pronouncements are part of our democratic process. We respect the courts and we will explore all legal and democratic avenues available to us,” he stated.
He expressed confidence that the party’s legal team would challenge the order and ensure that NDC members are not disenfranchised ahead of the next general elections.
The NDC flagbearer maintained that the party remains committed to issue-based politics, accountability, and mobilizing Nigerians who feel left out of the current political structure.
“Challenges will come, but democracy survives when the people refuse to give up on it,” he added.
