A 27-year-old man has been killed and four others injured following a violent clash between youths in Damaturu, Yobe State, over a divorced woman.
The Yobe State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday, June 30, 2026.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, said operatives from ‘A’ Division, Damaturu, responded to a distress call at about 3:00 a.m. on June 29, regarding a fight at Kalam Hamlet.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Abubakar Hassan, 30, had a disagreement with Buba Usman, 23, over the woman. Abubakar later invited his three brothers — Ibrahim Hassan, 27, Isa Hassan, 20, and Aliyu Hassan, 30 — to the scene.
According to police, Buba Usman allegedly attacked Ibrahim Hassan with an axe, inflicting a fatal cut to the neck that led to his immediate death. He also injured Abubakar, Isa, and Aliyu with the same weapon.
The statement added that relatives of the deceased later attacked Buba Usman with arrows, leaving him with abdominal injuries.
“Upon receipt of the report, police operatives visited the scene, evacuated the injured persons to the Teaching Hospital, Damaturu, for treatment, while the corpse of the deceased was deposited at the hospital morgue and later released to the family,” SP Abdulkarim said.
He added that the principal suspect, Buba Usman, is currently receiving treatment at the hospital and has confessed to the crime. “Investigation is ongoing,” he stated.
