…How a 1982 film set gave Nigeria one of its most influential creative families_
In 1982, two young Nigerians met on a movie set. Neither was famous yet.
One was *Oluwashina Akanbi Peters* — a struggling musician who would later become Sir Shina Peters, pioneer of Afro-Juju.
The other was *Clarion Chukwura* — an undergraduate actress studying under Wole Soyinka, who would become one of Nollywood’s most respected screen stars.
Their brief relationship would produce *Clarence Abiodun Peters*, the music video director who would go on to define the visual language of modern African pop music.
By 1982, Shina Peters was grinding. He had released three albums in three years: _Way to Freedom_ (1980), _Freedom (Senwele)_ (1981), and _Money Power_ (1982). But success hadn’t come easy.
As a teenager, he dropped out of school against his parents’ wishes to chase music. The fallout left him homeless for a time, surviving on the kindness of strangers. His big break came working around the home of Juju legend Chief Ebenezer Obey, where he ran errands and absorbed everything about the music business. He later worked with Segun Adewale before going solo.
Across town in Ile-Ife, Clarion Chukwura was studying Acting and Speech at Obafemi Awolowo University under Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka. Born in Lagos and raised between Aba, Onitsha and Ibadan, she lost her father at age 11 — an event she credits with shaping her resilience.
Her breakout came that same year when veteran filmmaker *Ola Balogun* cast her in _Money Power_ after seeing her in Soyinka’s _Camwood on the Leaves_.
It was on that set that she met Shina Peters.
The relationship moved fast. In 1983, they welcomed a son: *Clarence Abiodun Peters*.
The couple never married and eventually went their separate ways. But Clarence would grow up to become Africa’s most sought-after music video director, shooting for Wizkid, Davido, Tiwa Savage, Burna Boy and others. He helped give Nigerian music its global visual identity.
Both parents also went on to legendary careers.
For Shina Peters, stardom arrived in 1989 with _Ace (Afro Juju Series 1)_. The album went double-platinum and created the Afro-Juju sound. _Shinamania_ followed in 1990 and sealed his place in music history.
Clarion Chukwura became a household name through _Mirror in the Sun_, _Glamour Girls_, _Egg of Life_ and dozens more. Over four decades she has won multiple awards and become known as much for her humanitarian work as for her acting.
The meeting on the set of _Money Power_ lasted only a chapter. But its impact runs through four decades of Nigerian pop culture — from Afro-Juju to Nollywood to the music videos that now export Nigerian culture to the world.
Two icons met. One son was born. And an entire generation of African entertainment was shaped.
