All the schoolchildren and teachers abducted during the May 15, 2026 attack in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have been rescued, security officials confirmed.
The victims were freed on Wednesday following a coordinated joint operation by security forces. According to authorities, the operation targeted the kidnappers’ hideout and led to the safe release of the remaining captives.
Tragically, one teacher did not survive. Officials said the teacher was killed while in captivity before the rescue mission. The names of the victims have not yet been released pending notification of families.
The May 15 attack had sparked widespread concern across Oyo State, with parents, community leaders, and education stakeholders calling for urgent action to secure the release of those taken.
State government officials praised the security agencies for their swift coordination and professionalism during the rescue. They also expressed condolences to the family of the teacher who lost their life.
“We are relieved that our children and teachers are back, but our hearts go out to the family that lost a loved one,” a government spokesperson said. “We will continue to work to ensure schools in Oyo State are safe.”
Investigations into the attack are ongoing, and security has been reinforced in schools across Oriire LGA and other vulnerable areas in the state.
