FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings following ugly post-match scenes in Sunday’s World Cup final between Spain and Argentina.
Substitute Ferran Torres emerged as the hero for La Roja, scoring in the 106th minute of extra time to break a 0-0 deadlock and secure Spain’s second World Cup title. The goal denied Argentina a chance at back-to-back championships.
But the celebrations were overshadowed by clashes on the pitch at full-time.
Video footage showed Argentina’s Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina appearing to strike Spain’s Eric García and Rodri. Argentina coach Roberto Ayala was also seen in an altercation with Spain’s Dani Olmo.
In a statement, FIFA confirmed it has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to review the incidents.
“Following an assessment of the relevant match reports for the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in line with Article 36 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FDC with regard to the post-match incidents,” FIFA said.
“Further details will be communicated by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee once the prosecutor’s report has been completed.”
The governing body has not yet indicated what sanctions, if any, could be imposed. The outcome of the prosecutor’s report will determine whether players and staff face fines, suspensions, or other disciplinary action.
