Stephen Eustaquio broke South African hearts with a 92nd-minute winner as Canada edged a tense 1-0 knockout clash to reach the World Cup Round of 16.
The co-hosts needed a late spark, and Eustaquio delivered it at the death. The defeat brings South Africa’s historic World Cup run to an end. Bafana Bafana had made history by reaching the knockout stage for the first time after a group-stage win over South Korea.
They defended resolutely and threatened on the break, but could not hold out against Canada’s late pressure.
