Lawmakers approved the bill on Wednesday after considering and adopting all 26 clauses during the Committee of the Whole session.
The passage means the bill has cleared a key hurdle in the Senate. For it to become law, it must also pass in the House of Representatives and secure approval from at least 24 of Nigeria’s 36 state assemblies, as required for constitutional amendments.
The proposed state police system has been debated for years as a response to rising insecurity and concerns over centralized policing. Proponents argue it will allow states to better address local security challenges, while critics raise concerns about misuse and funding.
